DESIGN – The Hockey Rink

Ice Rinks.jpg

As a hockey mom, I spend many hours at the rink, which got me thinking – aside from having good coffee available, what makes a good hockey rink, both as a mom and as an engineer?

Because of the potential injury from flying pucks, arenas now have full netting above the glass boards.
Heating and cooling could be better managed if the netting was replaced with full glass, and it would improve my pictures. Does anyone have any data on the heating/cooling of rinks?

Rinks are BRIGHT! My kid’s novice/atom/bantam team doesn’t need the rink as bright as it is for a televised game. With the multi-tube fluorescents, I understand that people think there's a problem if some of the lights are off - I’d love to see LED retrofits and replacements, with pre-set dimmed light levels, so the lights still look “on” while the light levels are appropriate. And I won’t need to wear sunglasses.

In the interest of keeping under LinkedIn’s character limit for a post, I’ll leave the engineering only items, for today, but included one “mom” specific item:  All rinks need coffee bars, with good coffee.
