POWER - Integrated PV

I took these pictures 10 years ago, in Bremenhaven, Germany, as I loved the Building Integrated PV (BIPV) – the shading it provided, the playful shadows on the floor and still feeling completely connected to the outdoors. This technology was also used in the Greenstone Building in Yellowknife, which opened in 2005. So, it's been around a while.

What I love about BIPV is the combination of beauty and function.  Integrating solar right into the building. Thinking about what makes the solar appropriate, where it should go, and how to make it work well. In both Yellowknife and Bremenhaven, the PV was placed to reduce the need for shades (interior or exterior), reducing other materials that may have been required.

Because of this, I’m truly looking forward to the completion of the solar PV installation at the Edmonton Convention Centre:  A huge shout-out to my former colleagues at DIALOG – well done! I hope it’s as interactive and playful as the building in Bremenhaven, and I’m looking forward to seeing the performance data.
